Like reckless birds, it takes up the adventures of Ana, granddaughter of the endearing Loxandra, back home after her long Russian journey, recounted in Vacations in the Caucasus. Of clear autobiographical inspiration, the novel makes us travel from Constantinople between the wars, in full allied occupation, to Alexandria in the 1920s -"a city divided in two: paradise and hell", in the words of the author- and Athens in the 1930s and 1940s, the scene of a traumatic German occupation. An author of extraordinary sensitivity, throughout these pages Iordanidu once again recreates with masterful vividness the adventures of her characters and of an entire generation in the turbulent times that she herself lived through.
