Saramago, José

Dawn in Lisbon. On a morning in the middle of the 20th century, the novelist looks out of a neighborhood window. A day not very different from the others is announced: the shoemaker Silvestre, who opens his workshop; Adriana, who leaves for work while at her house three women begin another day of sewing; Justina, who has before her a long day punctuated by her disputes with her brutal husband; the maintained Lidia, and the Spanish Carmen, mired in nostalgia... Discreetly, the novelist's gaze descends and, suddenly, he stops being a simple witness to see with the eyes of each of the characters. Chapter by chapter, he jumps from house to house, from character to character, opening up a world governed by necessity, great frustrations, small illusions, nostalgia for times that were not even better. All covered by the tedious silence of the dictatorship, the music of Beethoven and a question from Pessoa: Should we all be married, futile, taxable?
