Capitán Fracasa

Lertxundi, Anjel

The novel begins with two images: the Omega symbol in the heading of a passport and two birds pecking at each other in the sky, an image that seems invested with the force of a prophecy. The recipient of the disturbing message that the passport portends is a disgraced individual within the mafia environment that he has frequented, and who hides behind various fictitious names: Marcel, Cerdán, Osorio... But who sends it? Who hides behind the Omega sign? The most endearing heroes of the modern novel have been ordinary, complex, and ambiguous characters. His heroism is reduced to inventorying one by one the experiences that emerge thanks to the random immersion in a battered memory. A life without order or meaning is intolerable to us: its rescue with the help of fiction is essential. Even more so (if possible), as in this novel, when not even the narrator knows the reasons for his misfortune. However, when he is offered that passport whose origin he does not know, he already has a certainty, he knows that there is no possible escape. From now on, he will only have the anguishing balance of memories of him. His objective will no longer be to flee, but to ensure that death does not become a simple ceremony of nothingness.
