In April 1800, Great Britain, still undefeated, continues to fight bravely against Napoleon's expansionism. One night, during a musical evening at the English governor's house in Puerto Mahón, an Irishman of Catalan origin elbows a ship's lieutenant who, next to him, transported by the triumphant first movement of Locatelli's Quartet in C major, insists on beating the beat at the wrong time. They will make peace, although reluctantly. The next day, and by surprise, Lieutenant Jack Aubrey will be promoted and will receive command of the Sophie, Her Majesty's corvette from Admiral Nelson's fleet. And he immediately decides to recruit the superb Irishman and doctor, Stephen Maturin, as surgeon on board. From that moment on, a friendship begins that will last through different successes and calamities across the oceans, in the tropical jungles, in the streets of Boston and in the dungeons of Paris.
