Leaving aside traditional literary histories, this essay brings an innovative approach to Basque literature. Based on the historical conflicts or violence that characterize our history and culture, it distinguishes between at least two literatures: on the one hand, those expressed by the lower classes or oppressed (peasants, peasants) in Basque, mostly related to oral tradition, and written by Basque elites in Spanish. Gabilondo emphasizes that literature written in Basque still has a symbolic role today: to give a symbolic and differential identity to a Basque people who still speak and write mostly in state languages. It redefines Spanish and French literature and, based on the Basque case, involves a new theorization of minority literature. It focuses on texts, disciplines, and practices that are not recognized by traditional historiography; such as political discourse, anthropology, tourism, and economics. It also sows most of the historical literary discourse (new historicism, postcolonial theory, multiculturalism, subaltern studies), and makes a new methodological and theoretical proposal. Finally, this story presents us with some historical movements under a new light; such as nationalism, feminism, modernity, and globalization. Sabin Arana, Yehuda Halevi, Maialen Lujanbio, Axular, Victor Hugo, Miguel Unamuno, Itxaro Borda and Jorge Oteiza will speak together in this juicy essay, which is somewhat adapted to Basque readers.
