Araceli

Araceli

Morante, Elsa

Manuele is a man in his forties who painstakingly cultivates unhappiness. Peculiar, misanthropic and homosexual, he lives with the ever-present memory of the woman who gave him life and who died when he was a child: the beautiful and rebellious Araceli. In search of his roots, Manuele decides to leave Milan and venture to a lost town in Almería, where his maternal family comes from. This trip, which he imagined as a reunion, soon turns into a nightmare in which Araceli's old image fades and the narrator's ghosts triumph. His uncle also appears, a soldier who fought in the Civil War, and his father, a Piedmontese nobleman and eternal rival of Manuele, and finally the lament of a man who did not grow up and who prefers to mourn lost loves than real deaths prevails.
