We can thank Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) for inventing the modern detective story with his formidable story "The Murders of the Rue Morgue" and the subsequent adventures of detective Auguste Dupin, but this particular niche of mystery literature is as colorful and interesting as all the detectives presented in this volume. From the incomparable Sherlock Holmes, to the phlegmatic Father Brown, through the flamboyant Prince Florizel, and the unpredictable and mystical Carnacki and Hesselius, the detective tale is a literary monument to human ingenuity and creativity, and in some cases a window into the worst of our nature, where the north is always justice and truth, whatever the cost. Chesterton; "The Death of Halpin Frayser," by Ambrose Bierce; "The Secluded House Investigator" by William Hope Hodgson; and finally, "Green Tea" by Sheridan Le Fanu.
