Lying in the residence where she spends her last days, Benedetta Toso, suffering from cancer, wants to talk to Brunetti. Although she only has a few moments of lucidity, the woman manages to say a few sentences about some illegal money from her husband, who recently died in a strange car accident. She is convinced that her death was a "murder." The thread of the investigation will lead the commissioner to a private company in charge of monitoring water quality, where, in addition to facing the truth about the murder, Brunetti will dive into a case of polluting spills, the which can have catastrophic consequences for the health of the Venetians.
