Between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, the city of A Coruña was a beacon of libertarian thought in Galicia. Athenaeums and neighborhood libraries were the gateway to the culture of the popular classes, working class solidarity flourished. In the tobacco and match factories the workers organized to improve their living conditions. Reading inside the factories is the powerful symbol of this movement of hope that has been truncated since 1936.
