| The Spanish Pacific designates the space Spain colonized or aspired to rule in Asia between 1521 -- with the arrival of Ferdinand Magellan -- and 1815 -- the end of the Manila-Acapulco galleon trade route. It encompasses what we identify today as the Philippines and the Marianas, but also Spanish America, China, Japan, and other parts of Asia that in the Spanish imagination were extensions of its Latin American colonies. This reader provides a selection of documents relevant to the encounters and entanglements that arose in the Spanish Pacific among Europeans, Spanish Americans, and Asians while highlighting the role of natives, mestizos, and women. El Pacífico español designa el espacio que España colonizó o aspiró a gobernar en Asia entre 1521 --con la llegada de Fernando de Magallanes-- y 1815 --el final de la ruta comercial de los galeones Manila-Acapulco--. Abarca lo que hoy identificamos como Filipinas y las Marianas, pero también la América española, China, Japón y otras partes de Asia que en el imaginario español eran extensiones de sus colonias latinoamericanas. Este libro ofrece una selección de documentos relevantes para los encuentros y enredos que surgieron en el Pacífico español entre europeos, hispanoamericanos y asiáticos, al tiempo que destaca el papel de los nativos, los mestizos y las mujeres. |
