The relationship between the United States and Spain evolved rapidly over the course of the nineteenth century, culminating in hostility during the Spanish–American War. However, scholarship on literary connections between the two nations has been limited aside from a few studies of the small coterie of Hispanists typically conceived as the canon in this area. This volume collects essays that push the study of transatlantic connections between U.S. and Spanish literatures in new directions. The contributors represent an interdisciplinary group including scholars of national literatures, national histories, and comparative literature. Their works explore previously understudied authors as well as understudied works by better-known authors. They use these new archives to present canonical works in new lights. Moreover, they explore organic entanglements between the literary traditions, and how those raditions interface with Latinx literary history.
La relación entre Estados Unidos y España evolucionó rápidamente a lo largo del siglo XIX, culminando en hostilidad durante la Guerra Hispano-Norteamericana. Sin embargo, los estudios sobre las conexiones literarias entre las dos naciones han sido limitados, aparte de unos pocos estudios sobre el pequeño grupo de hispanistas típicamente concebido como el canon en este ámbito. Este volumen reúne ensayos que impulsan el estudio de las conexiones transatlánticas entre las literaturas estadounidense y española en nuevas direcciones. Los autores forman un grupo interdisciplinar que incluye estudiosos de las literaturas nacionales, las historias nacionales y la literatura comparada. Sus trabajos exploran autores hasta ahora poco estudiados, así como obras poco estudiadas de autores más conocidos. Utilizan estos nuevos archivos para presentar obras canónicas bajo una nueva luz. Además, exploran los enredos orgánicos entre las tradiciones literarias y cómo esas radiaciones interactúan con la historia literaria latina.
