Vivimos en un "mundo en quiebra", dentro de una organización sociopolítica e histórica que está llegando a su fin y se resiste a desaparecer. El mundo globalizado, postmoderno y tardocapitalista, ha derrochado la enorme reserva de recursos y ha dilapidado el capital humano de forma inconsciente, con el único fin de aumentar la tasa de ganancia y el lucro, beneficios estos que sólo lo han sido para una pequeña parte de la humanidad, mientras la inmensa mayoría ha quedado excluida.
Urge, pues, una transformación del modo de pensar y comprender el mundo, y la Iglesia tiene mucho que decir y hacer en el camino que el ser humano ha de recorrer. Esta institución no puede servir a dos amos, si sirve a este mundo que lleva a la muerte inútil de millones de seres humanos, se convertirá en cómplice del mal y legitimadora de la injusticia; si sirve a Dios, pondrá en práctica todo su ser en el mundo para proponer una alternativa radical que nos empuje hacia el Reino de Dios. En esta línea, la doctrina social de la Iglesia puede ser una continuación de la apuesta por el Reino o un giro que nos deje amarrados a un mundo que se hunde sin remedio.

According to the author of this essay, we live in a bankrupt world, within a historical and socio-political organisation that is coming to its end and resisting its disappearance. The globalised, post-modern, late-capitalist world has thoughtlessly squandered a huge reservoir of resources and human capital for the sole purpose of increasing the rate of earnings and profit, benefiting only a small part of humanity, while the vast majority has remained excluded.
Therefore, a change is urgently needed in the way of thinking about and understanding the world, and the Church has much to say and do about the path mankind is to take. This institution cannot serve two masters: if it serves this world that leads millions of human beings to futile death, it will become an accomplice of evil and will legitimise injustice; if it serves God, it will put its whole being into action in the world to propose a radical alternative that drives us towards the Kingdom of God. Thus, the social doctrine of the Church can be a continuation of the commitment to the Kingdom, or a change of direction that leaves us tied to a helplessly sinking world.
