Since 2004, the artist Antoni Abad has developed a series of geographically diverse, multidisciplinary, innovative and socially committed projects encompassed in megafone.net. This platform invites different groups at risk of exclusion to express their experiences and opinions using cell phones, audio messages, videos, texts and photos to publish on the web. Amongst these groups are the motoboys (São Paulo), taxi drivers (Mexico City), young gypsies (León), sex workers (Madrid), Nicaraguan immigrants (San José, Costa Rica), visually impaired people (Barcelona) and Latino and Asian immigrants (New York). The texts range from art history and criticism to geography and ethnography, from communication studies to social and political thought. Together they make a thorough analysis of the alternative uses of smart phones and social networks as a vehicle of expression for vulnerable groups. The exhibition project and this publication are the result of a collaboration between MACBA and AC/E. |
