| Este es el relato de cómo el exilio de los científicos e intelectuales españoles tras la caída de la República puso punto final a la Edad de Plata de la ciencia española, al quebrarse la continuidad de una esperanzadora senda abierta en el terreno de la investigación y la formación de un sistema de ciencia profesional que se había iniciado a comienzos de siglo XX de la mano de la Junta para la Ampliación de Estudios. En ese momento, el único consuelo que les quedó a sus protagonistas fue darse cuenta de hasta qué punto las relaciones científicas y personales trabadas durante las décadas anteriores les iban a servir de apoyo tras la debacle republicana. Una vez en el exilio, buena parte de ellos trataron de adherirse a los discursos legitimistas republicanos, aportándoles la cobertura “ética” que representaba su encarnación de una tradición de pensamiento liberal y moderno frente al nacionalcatolicismo franquista. Tras el final de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, las esperanzas renacieron, pero la deriva de la política internacional al final de los años cuarenta pronto las enfrió. Entonces, la mayoría tomó conciencia de la nueva derrota republicana y se resignaron a un largo exilio en aquellos refugios que ya habían servido en 1939. This is the story of how Spanish scientists' and intellectuals' exile after the fall of the Republic put an end to the silver age of science in Spain, breaking the continuity of a promising path in the field of research and the formation of a system of professional science that had commenced at the beginning of the twentieth century under the auspices of the Junta para la Ampliación de Estudios (Board for the expansion of studies). At that time, the only consolation for those concerned was the realisation of the extent to which scientific and personal relationships formed during the previous decades would provide support after the republican defeat. Once in exile, many of them tried to adhere to the republican loyalist discourse, endowing them with the moral stature of incarnating a tradition of liberal modern thought against Franco's National-Catholicism. After the end of the Second World War, their hopes were rekindled, but the direction in which international politics drifted at the end of the forties meant these hopes soon faded. Then, the majority became aware of the new Republican defeat and resigned themselves to a long exile in the havens they had sought in 1939. |
