La única e indiscutible concepción de los jeroglíficos hasta fines del siglo XVIII estaba fundada en la traducción que había hecho Ficino de Plotino, quien aseguraba que los egipcios, bien por medio de la ciencia o de forma casual, habían llegado a un método mediante el cual podían escribir con distintas pinturas de objetos materiales que estaban en deuda con cualidades simbólicas por medio de las cuales revelaban al que las contemplaba, si era un iniciado, una percepción o intuición profunda de la verdadera esencia y sustancia de las cosas, y un entendimiento intuitivo de su origen transcendental. Piero Valeriano intenta reconstruir ese lenguaje mudo y simbólico de la ideas, de modo que cada concepto pueda tener su expresión jeroglífica adecuada y que todo el conocimiento filosófico de la época pueda ser enunciado por medio de un sistema universal de símbolos jeroglíficos. La obra está dividida en 58 libros. Esta edición ofrece un estudio previo que ayuda a contextualizar la obra, a comprender la tradición en que se inserta y a conocer los métodos y procedimientos del humanista que la produjo. Esta obra presenta una edición crítica y una primera traducción al español con notas explicativas del Prólogo general y de los libros I-V de los Hieroglyphica. Consta de una introducción general con la biografía del autor y la presentación general de tan compleja obra. Cierran el libro cuatro índices. También se reproducen las ilustraciones contenidas en la edición de Basilea de 1556.
The only indisputable conception of the hieroglyphics until the end of the eighteenth century was based on Ficino's translation of Plotinus, who claimed that the Egyptians, either by science or chance, had struck upon a method whereby they could write with different types of paint from material objects that were in debt to symbolic qualities whereby they revealed to initiates a perception or deep intuition of the true essence and substance of things, and an intuitive understanding of their transcendental origin. Piero Valerian tries to reconstruct this silent symbolic language of ideas, so that each concept can have its proper hieroglyphic expression and that the entire philosophical knowledge of the time can be expressed by means of a universal system of hieroglyphic symbols. The work is divided into 58 books. This edition offers a preliminary study aiming to help readers put the work into context, understand the tradition to which it belongs, and learn about the methods and procedures of the humanist who produced it.This book presents a critical edition and a first Spanish translation with explanatory notes to the general Prologue and to Books I-V of the Hieroglyphica. It includes a general introduction with the biography of the author and the overall presentation of this complex work. The book is rounded off by four indexes. The illustrations contained in the Basel edition of 1556 are also reproduced here.
