| Gallaecia Gothica offers a new interpretation of the Argimundus rebellion, one of the most difficult challenges of Reccared’s reign. There are no specific details of how the conspiracy came about, but the throne was seriously threatened. The Chronicle of John of Biclaro underlined the gravity of this menace in his description of the punishment suffered by the rebel and his collaborators. His categorical condemnation of the attempted overthrow of the monarch is unlike that given to any other uprising narrated in the Chronicle, and it shows the importance that the abbot of Biclaro gave it in his narration. The fact that the Chronicle notes that Argimundus was not only a member of the Aula Regia but also a dux prouinciae (duke of a province), combined with the status of Gallaecia as a newly conquered province, suggests that this was not just a palace conspiracy, but a genuine provincial revolt which could have ruined the political settlement established by Leovigild and Reccared. However, it is difficult to prove Argimundus’ ultimate aim: to replace Reccared on the Visigothic throne or, on the contrary, to restore the old Suevic kingdom in Gallaecia. This book uses numismatic and archaeological evidence seems to suggest the latter view. Gallaecia Gothica ofrece una nueva interpretación de la rebelión de Argimundo, uno de los retos más difíciles del reinado de Reccared. No hay detalles concretos de cómo se gestó la conspiración, pero el trono se vio seriamente amenazado. La Crónica de Juan de Biclaro subraya la gravedad de esta amenaza en su descripción del castigo sufrido por el rebelde y sus colaboradores. Su condena categórica del intento de derrocamiento del monarca no se parece a la que se da a ningún otro levantamiento narrado en la Crónica, y muestra la importancia que el abad de Biclaro le dio en su narración. El hecho de que la Crónica señale que Argimundo no sólo era miembro del Aula Regia, sino también dux prouinciae (duque de una provincia), unido a la condición de la Gallaecia como provincia recién conquistada, sugiere que no se trató de una mera conspiración palaciega, sino de una auténtica revuelta provincial que podría haber arruinado el acuerdo político establecido por Leovigildo y Recaredo. Sin embargo, es difícil demostrar el objetivo último de Argimundo: sustituir a Recaredo en el trono visigodo o, por el contrario, restaurar el antiguo reino suevo en Gallaecia. Este libro utiliza pruebas numismáticas y arqueológicas que parecen sugerir esta última opinión. |
